Did you know that less than 10% of the British coaches who went to the summer Olympics in 2004 were women.
The two-year Women into Coaching 2 – London (WiC2) Partnership programme which started in August 2006 is now coming to an end. The programme was able to fund up to 210 coaching qualifications for women and girls across London. Qualifications offered included NVQ levels 1-3 in eight sports, including badminton, basketball, cricket, football, gymnastics, rowing, rugby league and swimming, plus a new professional qualification in developing / delivering community sports programmes delivered by London Community Sports Network and Sport Leaders UK community and higher sports leaders courses.
The lead Partner of the WiC2 programme is the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF), who campaign to make physical activity and an integral part of life for women and girls in the UK.

Now that the WiC2 project is coming to nearly end, we can no longer accept any new applications for funding. However, there are other funded opportunities available within London which include:
1.Coaching Bursaries - SkillsActive have secured £250,000 from the Learning and Skills Council and Sport England to subsidise coaching qualifications for 400 of London’s sports coaches. In partnership with Sport England London Region and the Learning and Skills Council (London), the Coaching Bursary from SkillsActive and the five Pro-Active Partnerships provides financial support and guidance for all London-based coaches wanting to improve their skills, experience and qualifications. 2.Sprint Project – London Community Sports Network – The Sprint Project is a bespoke programme which aims to up skill the youth and community sport workforce who work with young people that are at risk of exclusion. This unique new Olympic inspired project provides continual professional development to the community sports and recreation workforce across the 33 London boroughs with a special focus on those working in the five Olympic host boroughs.
Through a package of over forty different FREE training courses (both accredited and non-accredited) Sprint will increase the skills of the workforce in order to support the diverse issues facing young people. This exciting programme of professional development focuses clearly on three vocational areas:
Sprint will offer 500 learners from across every London borough (250 of those will specifically be from the five host Olympic borough) the opportunity to access accredited (Level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications) and non-accredited courses and provide informal learning opportunities with seminars, short workshops and masterclasses. 1. Future basketball stars descend on London- From 4th – 6th July Richmond upon Thames College, one of the largest providers of education for 16-19 year olds in the country, is hosting ‘Future Stars 2008’, a unique basketball event that combines a coaching conference and an U-18 international junior tournament. An opportunity to learn the best techniques from internationally renowned basketball coaches, participate in masterclasses and enjoy a tournament involving young people from 6 different countries. 2. London Playing Fields Foundation - A Female Coach Development initiative will commence in August 2008 (subject to funding) which aims to increase the number of female football coaches at Level 2. The project, managed by the London Playing Fields Foundation, will provide Level 1 holders who are currently working in a coaching capacity with the support they need to successfully complete a Level 2 Coaching Certificate course. This will entail assignment to a mentor, who will then support the trainee coach through the following process. Click here to find out more information about this programme.
